Join me this summer in the cool Colorado mountains, August 7-11, 2019!

This SewJourn is designed as a classic retreat experience, set in a gorgeous mountain valley, about 45 minutes from Denver, CO.  Spend an  extended weekend fully immersed in your own sewing / quilting projects, and enjoy a trunk show presentation by our guest artist Valerie White.

We’ll also uncover a few of Denver’s best “CE-approved” specialty spots on our 1-day field trip. Think of it as a 5-day pajama party with like-minded sewing & quilting girlfriends!

We’ll share and enjoy our favorite wines all weekend as we stitch, including a guided tasting to help us pair wines not only with foods, but also with creative projects!   ; )  — lisa

Send the kids back to class with unique style you’ve created yourself!  You’ll love the feeling of satisfaction in creating fun and functional items that aren’t available in the stores, or online.

Add the excitement of colorful, culturally relevant fabrics and you’ve elevated basic school essentials into educational conversation pieces.  The vibrant colors, patterns and textures of authentic African fabrics inspire creativity, so they’re a great way to start the new school year.  Smocks and aprons, lunch bags, covered journals, bookmarks, zipper cases and drawstring backpacks are topping this year’s list of DIY school projects.

Of course, making time to sew in the back-to-school season can be a challenge. Take a creative shortcut by simply adding touches of the fabrics to existing garments — this not only saves time, but can also extend the life of a garment for yet another school year.  Embellishing too-short legs on jeans with fabric print cuffs, or stitching a fabric print patch pocket to a favorite T-shirt or tote bag extends their usage in a fun, easy way, in a matter of minutes.

In addition to selling Janome sewing machines, the studio is now scheduling private 60-minute sessions for those who already own a sewing machine, but have no clue of how to operate it.  Back-to-school time is the perfect time to take that machine out of the box and bring it in to learn how your sewing machine works. You even sew a simple mini-tote bag in the process.  Then, you’ll be ready to tackle some mending jobs, make new projects, and join in the fun of our fabrics, workshops and events.

The Studio is sharing free tips and ideas for sewing various back-to-school projects (including a few gift ideas for teachers!) during August and September.  Regular hours are Wed 4-8pm; Thu 12-6pm; Fri 12-6pm and Sat 10-6pm. Closed Mon and Tue.  (Please Note: The Studio will be CLOSED Aug 8-12 and Sept 19-22.)  For details, just stop by 1417 Main Street in Rahway, call 866-683-2568 (866-MUDCLOTH), or email info@CulturedExpressions.com.

#AfricanFabricMonth - Let the Giveaways Begin ; )It’s time for our first African Fabric Month giveaway for 2017, inspired by my “Jamaica Blue Mountain” fabric postcard! It started with a piece if extra firm heavyweight fusible craft interfacing, cut about 4″ x 6″. I fused the background fabric to it and layered the appliques to make the design. Note that the rust/orange sky section and the brown/green earth section are a single jacquard batik fabric!  Jacquard batiks make the BEST landscape quilts.  After it’s all arranged and stitched, I cut a piece of backing fabric about 1/4″ larger all around than the postcard, pressed the edges up and over to the front of the postcard, and stitched the raw edges into place as the binding… I love raw edge applique  ; )  and fabric postcards are a nice alternative to regular greeting cards (have you seen the price of greeting cards lately??!!)  If you want to write a message, fuse plain muslin to the center on the back and write with a permanent fineline fabric pen.

The second postcard shown here is one I did several years ago – it turned out to be kind of a landscape/ seascape look, complete with dimensional flowers.  The size is about 4″ x 6″, perfect for playing around with a new technique in a quick project you’ll actually finish.

What are you working on this African Fabric Month?  Comment below now thru this Wednesday for a chance to win a versatile scrap bundle and postcard interfacing for experimentation!  And whether you win or not, please continue to use the #AfricanFabricMonth and #SewAfrican on your African fabric posts all month long.  It’s our second year, let’s GROW this thing!!! Thank you and Good Luck to All!!

In addition to having our own time to create in our comfy mountain retreat house, we had the pleasure of visiting with the illustrious Valerie White for a trunk show of her beautiful work.  It was a special treat to tour her artfully appointed yet very comfortable home and studio space.  She even prepared a lovely lunch for us!

Next, we stopped in at the Rocky Mountain Wa Shonaji Quilt Guild’s opening reception for their annual quilt exhibition.  These ladies do a top-notch presentation, with gorgeous quilts, an ATC mini-exhibition, fun games, giveaways handcrafted by the guild members and yes, a nice buffet ; )

The exhibition, “I Did It My Way”,  is on view now thru September 28 at the Blair Caldwell Library in Denver. I had lots of faves in the show, but here are a few:

Between Valerie and the Wa Shonaji guild, we left inspired to go back up the mountain and continue to create, laying the groundwork for an extra-productive African Fabric Month in September — get ready!!
