I’ve been running a lot lately, and except for just ONE more travel-induced studio closing from Nov 1-3 (a private quilting event in CT), I’ll be in the Cultured Expressions studio every Wed thru Saturday as scheduled!!

My latest trip to Ghana resulted in all kinds of African fabrics and other goodies, so be sure to come by the studio in Rahway, or schedule a fun and easy Virtual Visit – we set up a time for me to call you on a video phone call, and I take you thru the studio so you can see everything and make your selections.  When you’re ready to schedule yours, download the DUO video call app  on your phone — see logo at right –(it works on iPhone AND Android), and contact me to arrange a day & time.

Also, now thru Sunday, you can save 10% on our 10″ Square African Print bundles, Black/White Strip Bundles, and 40-pack of African print FQs!!  No coupon needed, the discount will show in your cart.  ; )

PLUS, FREE SHIPPING on $75 or more…

See you soon – I’ll be unpacking for a while! —-   lisa

Send the kids back to class with unique style you’ve created yourself!  You’ll love the feeling of satisfaction in creating fun and functional items that aren’t available in the stores, or online.

Add the excitement of colorful, culturally relevant fabrics and you’ve elevated basic school essentials into educational conversation pieces.  The vibrant colors, patterns and textures of authentic African fabrics inspire creativity, so they’re a great way to start the new school year.  Smocks and aprons, lunch bags, covered journals, bookmarks, zipper cases and drawstring backpacks are topping this year’s list of DIY school projects.

Of course, making time to sew in the back-to-school season can be a challenge. Take a creative shortcut by simply adding touches of the fabrics to existing garments — this not only saves time, but can also extend the life of a garment for yet another school year.  Embellishing too-short legs on jeans with fabric print cuffs, or stitching a fabric print patch pocket to a favorite T-shirt or tote bag extends their usage in a fun, easy way, in a matter of minutes.

In addition to selling Janome sewing machines, the studio is now scheduling private 60-minute sessions for those who already own a sewing machine, but have no clue of how to operate it.  Back-to-school time is the perfect time to take that machine out of the box and bring it in to learn how your sewing machine works. You even sew a simple mini-tote bag in the process.  Then, you’ll be ready to tackle some mending jobs, make new projects, and join in the fun of our fabrics, workshops and events.

The Studio is sharing free tips and ideas for sewing various back-to-school projects (including a few gift ideas for teachers!) during August and September.  Regular hours are Wed 4-8pm; Thu 12-6pm; Fri 12-6pm and Sat 10-6pm. Closed Mon and Tue.  (Please Note: The Studio will be CLOSED Aug 8-12 and Sept 19-22.)  For details, just stop by 1417 Main Street in Rahway, call 866-683-2568 (866-MUDCLOTH), or email info@CulturedExpressions.com.

And if you see a class you like but your schedule doesn’t quite match ours, let me know – we’re flexible and will try to accommodate you on another date – even better, our custom dates are easier to arrange if you have a group of three or more.

We’ve come up with a fun and easy way for our faraway friends to enjoy the new Studio in Rahway!  It’s called a Virtual Visit – think personal shopping meets African fabrics meets video chat.

Just download the DUO video call app on your phone.  Android users likely have it pre-installed, and it works on the iPhone, too.  Look for this icon:

Then we arrange a convenient time to video call you, and we take you through the studio, where you can see and shop everything that’s available, form fabrics by the yard to fat quarters and precuts to embellishments to kits to handbag supplies, gift items and more.  We total your order, take your payment information, and generally ship your order within two days!  It’s almost like being at the Studio in person, but without the refreshments  ; )

SewJourn Updates

SewJourn updates: Our 2018 SewJourn Santa Fe is already sold out, and a wait list is available.  To be added to the wait list, please send in your registration as usual.  We will HOLD your check until a space opens up — and if one does, we’ll confirm your availability, and either process your registration, or return your check.

I think it filled so quickly in part because several of last year’s wait list contenders wasted no time this year to ensure their spots this time around  ; ) Nice work, ladies!!

Meanwhile, we DO still have spots available for our Wine Lover’s Quilt Retreat in the Colorado mountains, August 8-12, 2018…but I wouldn’t wait too long! African fabrics and wine are a match made in heaven, and together we’ll create a master pairings list of creative projects and wine (kinda like which food goes with which wine, but even funner  ; ) And we’ll spend time with my big sister, renowned fiber artist Valerie White, check out the work of our friends at the WaShonaji Quilt Guild, and a few other exciting features! REGISTER TODAY

— like, literally, LOL.

Luckily, we’re making our way thru winter fairly well here in Rahway, so my thoughts have already turned to the approaching Spring season, and all of the opportunities we have to Create with African fabrics — Birthdays, Proms, Mother’s Day, Women’s History Month, and of course, the still-growing influence of all things “Wakanda Style”!  I’m looking forward to our second season here at the studio, and with that, we release the Spring workshop schedule ; )

In addition to our old favorites, we’ve added three new workshops…

Plus, you can enjoy three new “Drop-In Demos” (spontaneous opportunities to learn and create, each about 15 minutes long and with no pre-registration required!)

You can even arrange our existing workshops to fit YOUR schedule, with a minimum of just 3 people, so grab a couple of friends and get in touch with us  ; )  This is a great option if you’re coming from out of town. Consider making a weekend of it – the brand-new Watt Hotel is one block away, and downtown Rahway has plenty of restaurants and fun stuff happening.  It’s like a custom-designed creative retreat!

It’s almost Spring – leave the house, take a workshop.  As you can see, we’re flexible– as long as you want to create, we’ll work with you to make it happen  ; )  Looking forward to your visit!

Ready to plan your next creative escape?  Or, maybe your first one? Cultured Expressions is here to help  ; ) with a quick sneak peek for our 2018 SewJourn adventures!  Brochures are coming soon, but you’ll want to mark your calendars and plan to join us in Colorado and Santa Fe/Albuquerque!

We’re planning a fun new twist for our Colorado Mountain Retreat…this year, it’s morphed into The Wine Lovers’ Quilt Retreat.  Think of of as a 4-night sip-n-sew pajama party…’Nuff said!  Learn to pair wines not only with foods, but with your creative projects!  Enjoy time to work on your own projects, along with my mini workshop, a field trip into Denver. It all takes place in the mountains August 8-12, 2018 and the retreat house is located about 1 hour outside of Denver.  Details are being firmed up now.

Save the Dates: SewJourns 2018!

Likewise, we’re switching up our SewJourn to Santa Fe just a bit —  Master indigo artist Gasali Adeyemo returns as our featured instructor — this time, he’s sharing his expertise in traditional batik!  If you’ve taken his adire workshops, this 2-day batik intensive will round out your experience in Yoruba textile arts.  And we’ll soak up the knowledge of other area artisans as well, bringing home unique self-crafted souvenirs…  October 3-9, 2018

Once details are confirmed, we’ll publish the brochures.  If you’re interested, pelase don’t delay – our SewJourns seem to fill up faster each year, and space is limited to ensure a personal experience for everyone.   African fabrics, culture, food and drink with like-minded friends…Do not miss out!!
