We’ve just returned from one of CE’s best SewJourns ever!! Thanks to our participants and partners for another creative and relaxing experience in the Colorado mountains, just outside of Denver. It was our first Wine Lovers’ Quilt Retreat, and definitely not our last!    Check out these pix…

As you can see, African fabrics were the choice for the weekend. I was pleasantly surprised at how much we each accomplished creatively, wondering how the wine theme might affect productivity.  And apparently, it gave us a boost.  We stayed up latest the evening of our wine tasting, beautifully led by local wine experts Karen and Davis.

Add in perfect weather, comfortable accommodations, a fully stocked kitchen,  our field trip into Denver proper for a visit with Valerie C. White, and the Wa Shonaji quilt guild’s opening reception (blog post to follow) plus a few other surprises, and you can just imagine the fun we had…

Overall, I got very little sleep, running on adrenaline, and it was fabulous, lol!

; )   More pix to follow… And if you’d like to join me next year, mark your calendars now for August 7-11, 2019!! Don’t miss it!!

Who’s ready to create some fun new pieces to wear, carry, or enjoy at home?   Our Spring/Summer schedule is here, and I think you’ll find something(s) of interest to spark your creativity ; )  If you’re in the vicinity of our Studio in Rahway, NJ, or your summer travels bring you close by, join us for a creativity break!

And if you see a class you like but your schedule doesn’t quite match ours, let me know – we’re flexible and will try to accommodate you on another date – even better, our custom dates are easier to arrange if you have a group of three or more.

Each project is completed in one session, from 2 hours to 5.5 hours, so if you’re traveling, consider booking two workshops to make the most of your time here.  Not only do we have a discount arranged with a beautiful new hotel one block away, there are also great restaurants and more within a couple of blocks, too!  So, review all of this season’s offerings, and contact us to register or get more information!

OK, there’s a little snow on the ground, but the streets are clear and the holidays are over!  Which means it’s time to settle into creative indoor activities, surrounded by African fabrics!  Check out our Winter 2018 Workshop Schedulewith classes where you can make quilts, pillows, handbags, accessories, gift items, a cool bogolan poncho and more!

It all takes place at the CE Studio, 1417 Main Street, Rahway, NJ

And if you are a true beginner with NO sewing experience at all, start with Sewing Machine 101, a 2-hour primer on using the machine – you even make a mini African print tote! It’s just $35 and supplies are included. Bring a friend, or two…

I’ve realized over the years that some of my quilter friends don’t consider themselves “sewers” and many of you suffer from Zippaphobia, an unnatural fear of Zipper Installation!  We have two ways to cure that:  consider the Color Block Batik Handbag (shown), or African Mosaic Zippered Pouch.  Make 2018 the year you conquer the fear…  Seriously.

Register online, by phone at 866-MUDCLOTH, or in person at the Studio.

See a class you like, but the time won’t work?  We can schedule it at our mutual convenience with just 3 students, so grab your funnest friends and we’ll figure it out!

We’re also considering workshops by other instructors and fiber artists for the Spring schedule and beyond.  If you are interested in teaching a workshop, please contact Lisa via email, including a few images of your class idea.

I hope this post finds everyone safe and ready to enjoy the holiday season, to whatever degree you prefer.  As usual, I’ll be taking the laid-back approach, doing as little as I can get away with, but with all of the fun – and work – of the studio launch, there isn’t much leisure time at all for me this December! #nocomplaints  ; )

We’re at 1417 Main Street, Rahway, NJ, in the Arts District.  If you’re in the area, come out to the studio this Saturday, Dec 23.  We’ll be open our usual Saturday hours form 10am – 6pm, and from 3-6pm, join us for some birthday cake and champagne as we also celebrate the release of the winter workshop schedule, and studio progress in general.

The studio is easy to reach from NYC by NJ Transit, and just a one block walk when you get off of the train!  Or, if you’re driving, you’ll love the very affordable covered parking deck, just across the street from us.

Can’t get here?  Check out our online specials, now thru December 31  ; )

We’re ready for 2018!!  Are you???

After seeing and hearing about everyone else’s exciting projects during three CE events this summer  — namely the African American Quilt Conference in Lawrence, KS, then Quilt Odyssey in Hershey, PA, and our joint Customer Appreciation Day event with Yara African Fabrics in the Bronx, NY — I decided to stop everything and get back to my own machine.

I set myself up in the garage last Sunday, one of those perfect-weather days, and stitched up some not-so-random blocks using CE’s ABC Strip Bundles… sipped water and wine between blocks, it was fabulous!  The open garage gave me the perfect combination of indoors and outdoors. I need to do that more often… like maybe this Sunday!  Then I’ll be packing up the Janome Jem Gold for our SewJourn Colorado Mountain Retreat, starting this Wednesday  ; )

This is what I have so far – imagine 12 more blocks, with black silk douppioni sashing…hopefully I can move it forward during our retreat.

Enter the Garage Sip & Sew Giveaway!

So what are you sipping and sewing this summer, and where are you doing it? Comment below for the chance to win a mini-strip bundle! All comments posted by Wednesday at 12 noon will be eligible to win…Good Luck!

This article is giving me LIFE… I had to stop what I was doing (working on Fabrigasm issue #6) to share this article with you…

I’m hoping that Ghana’s new president, Nana Akufo-Addo, will help to bring quality African-led fabric production back to the region. You might remember his January 7, 2017 inauguration outfit. Since then, his love for African prints is becoming a Thing.

Now thru 11:59pm tonight, save 10% on Cultured Expressions’ 20-piece and 40-piece African Fabric Print FQ bundles!  The current selection may vary from what’s shown, but be assured of a colorful, varied assortment.

What’s a Fat Quarter? It’s a quilting term for a ¼ yard of fabric, measuring 18″ x 22″. Its “fat” dimensions (compared to a standard ¼ yard of fabric that measures 9″ long x 45″ wide) are more versatile for quilting, crafts, pillows, doll clothes, photo frames, desk accessories, covered journals… or just for general procurement – we don’t judge ; ) Fat quarters make it easier to collect a wide variety of prints for your fabric stash.

Fat Quarter FLASH SALE!

No coupon code needed – the discount will appear in your shopping cart.  Enjoy!

FABRIGASM ALERT!!!  So one of my CE  People (Cultured Expressions People), we’ll call her “Brenda from Brooklyn” ; ) emailed to let me know that I mistakenly send her only one bundle of our newest specialty FQ bundle, “Records”, instead of the two bundles that she ordered.  (I could blame the error on my Welcome-to-the-New-Year head cold, but that’s another blog post…)

Anyway, Brenda included this photo indicating the single bundle she received, and I was just so impressed by its simple artistry I had to share it:

This is why i love my CE People

It looks like Brenda is ready to get down to business with her African fabric, and she should have her second bundle tomorrow.  She did promise to share with me a photo of her project when it’s done! If you’ve been equally inspired, order your FQ bundle of “records” soon, quantities are limited!

Thanks for the photo, Brenda, and happy stitching.
